In honor of back-to-school month, September’s event is a Student Showcase! From Satire to Sci-Fi, Fantasy to Documentary, these four shorts focus on the exciting work being made by the next generation of local filmmakers:

• LABYRINTH by Brandon Mattesich: When she wakes up in the forest, the forest wakes up around her. Join her as she tries to find a way out. (3 min)

• STELLANS by Kai Monear: In a future world dominated by an advanced species known as machina stellans must escape their sprawling campus. (10 min)

• a small city called Taishan by Jordan Wu: A person that lived in the states for his entire life returns to his family’s hometown, searching for whether his hometown feels like a foreign place or home. (15 min)

• EXTRA BUTTER by T.C. Sheahan: A contemptuous moviegoer is determined to get enough butter on their popcorn. (3 min)

This month, the Seattle Film Society is proud to partner with the Langston & the Seattle Black Film Festival for a special Juneteenth edition of Locals Only! From visual poetry to centuries-old conspiracies, this event will showcase the breadth of talent bubbling up in Seattle's black film community:

• WASTE TIME by LIVt: Through a series of intimate vignettes, we follow a queer couple , a Black woman and an Indian woman, as they experience the beauty and fragility of love. (8 min)

• land.scape notes on exile by Berette S Macaulay: A poetic journey of rediscovery and return routes us through shifting landscapes. We follow the reflections of a seeker who is mystically guided by Oshun, the venerated orisha of water and destiny. (6 min)

• GO! by Brace Evans: Daily, Maxwell is told 'GO!' by individuals and the non-speaking walk signal.  During a business trip to Berlin, a kid helps him to realize that walk signals in the United States are being used to subconsciously train and sustain a centuries old hierarchy. (9 Min)

• SPLIT/SECOND by Lindy Boustedt: At Echo Glen High School, a juvenile detention facility in King County, WA, students examine the fragile moment between good and bad decisions while building community, as the voiceover traces one student’s early struggles with incarceration. Voiceover performed by a student at Shoreline College - a collaboration designed both to protect Echo students’ identities and to build an emotional bridge between youth who might otherwise never connect. (2 Min)

• YOU LOOK GOOD!!! by Bakari Hayez: A vibrant tribute to Black women, You Look Good examines the power of Black hair, beauty, and self-expression through a lens of joy, community, and cultural influence. (3 Min)

Our November Locals Only will be our final Locals Only of the year! This month’s event will be a retrospective and will feature seven of our favorite short films we’ve screened this year, interspersed with Q&A’s led by SFS’s Programming Team. The Films Screened will include:

• Passenger (3 Min, Animation/Experimental, Dir. Patrick Connelly): An experimental animation about the experience of commuting by train. Hand scratched on 16mm film.

• Femme (4 Min, Comedy/Horror, Dir. Laura Shelly): Best described as a "sour cupcake" Femme explores the dark comedy/horror/surrealist/feminist genre as experienced through the title character Femme.

• Bubblegum (12 Min, Comedy/Drama, Dir. Celestine Ocean): Star and Cleo - two siblings from a small town have to choose between personal gain or honest sacrifice when they stumble upon a life changing reward.

• Everything Happens (5 Min, Comedy/Drama, Dir. Andrew “Ducky” Dutkiewicz): A mother prepares a family dinner. Her son made other plans. A dog gets lost. Everything happens.

• The Connoisseur (3 Min, Comedy/Horror, Dir. Eric Morgret): You've been invited to a very special wine tasting.

• Hey… it’s me! (8 Min, Romance/Comedy, Dir. Brittney Cash): While preparing for a date, a severe case of deja vu sends a young woman down the rabbit hole of boyfriends past.

• The Art, The Artist & The Enthusiast (3 Min, Narrative/Poetry, Dir. Nathan Abia Lawer-Yolar): A motion picture questioning the viewer about their relationship to art, process and consumption

This month, we’re turning back the clock to celebrate our One Year Anniversary!
